JUAN SÁNCHEZ COTÁN

was a Spanish Baroque painter, a pioneer of realism in Spain. His still lifes—also called bodegones—were painted in an austere style, especially when compared to similar works in the Netherlands and Italy.

Juan Sánchez Cotán is one of the most famous painters of the Spanish Golden Age. He has only six existing works after shaping Spanish still life painting for nearly a century.

Students made versions of one of the most famous paintings of Cotán "Still Life with Game, Vegetables and Fruit, 1602.  Oil on canvas, approximately 27″ by 35″.  Prado, Madrid.
